Click & Collect at The Rock: Denise Lewis’s debut range with Next

If you’re looking for a fresh outfit for your home workouts, we’ve got you covered! Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis OBE has teamed up with Next (one of our resident retailers here at The Rock) to release a Spring 2021 activewear range.

The collection features key performance clothing essentials such as leggings, sports bras and breathable tops (all of which are available in sizes 6 to 22 or XS to XXL) that can be ordered online on the Next website and collected in-store at The Rock.

The perfect accompaniment to your home workouts

The debut Denise Lewis Edit is comprised of pieces that have been tested and approved by the Olympian herself. Suitable for a wide range of workouts, the collection has all the major features you’d expect from activewear staples – from sweat-wicking squat-proof leggings that lift your legs whilst keeping you cool, to inner waistbands and side pockets that are essential for keeping valuables secure.

As well as being a great accompaniment to your home workouts during lockdown, the collection is also engineered for “the gym of life” – in other words, it’s perfect for keeping you comfortable while going about your daily duties. Specially created with busy mums in mind, it caters for women who don’t always have time to fit workouts into their schedules.

This is certainly something mother-of-four Denise can relate to. Nevertheless, she finds that activewear keeps her looking and feeling good whilst juggling parental responsibilities, allowing her to go from running errands to working out without a wardrobe change.

“What I love about activewear is that it’s easy. It doesn’t matter what time of the day I put it on. It’s simple. I can go to the gym, I can pick up the kids from school. It’s just comfortable and I feel good in it.” – Denise Lewis

Stylish pieces made from breathable fabrics

Denise’s range is suitable for a host of different workouts – from high intensity training to low impact stretching and yoga – making her debut edit a versatile one-stop-shop for all your activewear needs.

With plenty of printed patterns and colourful designs to choose from, the collection doesn’t compromise on style. One of Denise’s favourites is the zip up hoody because it’s versatile and easy to throw on at a moment’s notice:

“I just love this zip up hoody, it’s such a strong piece. It’s perfect to throw on whether you’re coming from the gym and heading out to go shopping or picking up the kids, it’s just easy. The attention to detail is fabulous, a little bit edgy – I like!”

To cap off the outfits, Next have also developed technical trainers as part of the collection. Suitable for running and high impact activities, these sports shoes are lightweight yet supportive, available in four colours and with a moulded heel to prevent inward or outward pronation.

“These trainers are great for running or high impact activity. They’re really comfy and supportive – my feet don’t slip inside and they really grip the ground!”

So, if you’re looking to give your workout wardrobe a revamp, why not head over to the Next website to explore the Denise Lewis Edit? You can then collect in-store at The Rock.

Emma Willis releases sportswear range at Next

Emma Willis releases a sportswear range with Next to make your 2020 workouts a stylish affair

After designing four clothing ranges for Next, Emma Willis is continuing this collaboration with a 2020 sportswear collection, inspired by a desire to develop “sportswear that looked really good but was functional, and didn’t cost the earth.”

The design process

For her latest collection, Emma adds another string to her bow. As a passionate advocate of healthy living, moving into sportswear design was a natural segue for her.

“Sportswear was something I really wanted to do…January just seems perfect because you have that month of indulgence for Christmas”.

Thinking back on her own experiences with sportswear, Emma’s aim was to design pieces that were all about functionality, style and affordability.

The collection

Emma has released a collection that has everything you need for an active lifestyle.

“With a hectic work schedule and busy family life, exercising is important to me; it really helps me to stay focused and feel strong. Adding sportswear to the collection felt like a natural fit, there’s pieces suitable for any workout and we’ve also included some super comfy hoodies and joggers too”. –Emma Willis

The leggings are the perfect example of functionality and style combined. A deep waistband, sweat-wicking fabric and four way stretch technology means the leggings stay comfortable for every twist, lunge, jump and squat. They come in two styles, one with a graphic print and one in neon trimmed plain grey.

There are also two swimsuits for those who are more into swimming lengths than sweating at HIIT classes. One is a textured square neck black piece with white piping detail and the other is a high neck racer with crossover back detail. They’ve both been designed for function and support and feature discreet built-in cups.

How Emma stays healthy

Emma takes a holistic approach to health, making sure to pay attention to both her physical and mental wellbeing. Working out is about looking after body instead of looking a certain way. “I’m doing it to stay strong and stay able as I get older”, Emma explains.

She also doesn’t put pressure on herself in terms of setting a strict routine.

“I start with being realistic, looking at fitness week by week and judging how much time I have available to train…so I don’t get stressed out by not doing as much every week as I’d like to.”

Variety is key, although Emma does have a few preferences. Morning workouts are better than evening sessions and boxing and reformer pilates are her favourite classes.

When it comes to looking after her mental wellbeing, the mum-of-three makes sure she sets time aside for herself and for self-care.

“Finding time for yourself every week is so important. Normally, other things that take up my week are for my family with household chores etc. so I do recommend having some time during your week which is just something for yourself.”

Emma’s approach to diet

A healthy diet is essential to Emma. After the indulgent holiday period, she makes sure she restores the balance by going sugar-free in January.

Her daily diet will usually consist of an omelette for breakfast, salad or soup for lunch, and a nutrient rich dinner, like homemade stews or roasted vegetables.

Her husband, singer Matt Willis, even created a foolproof recipe for avoiding chocolate cravings.

“I’m not sure if Matt actually invented or discovered this, but he came up with this dessert for me at night so I don’t eat chocolate: coconut yoghurt, almond butter and some cacao powder (just the tip of the teaspoon).”

Set your 2020 goals in motion with Emma Willis’ sportswear capsule range. The collection will be available in store from Tuesday 31st December.

Shopping centre shines a light on Bury mums

Mums from across Bury and beyond were the focus of a special celebration at The Rock.

We played host to our very own ‘Museum of Mum’ on the run up to Mother’s Day.

The glitzy installation shone a spotlight on more than 70 mums from the town as images shared by families through a social media competition were displayed on screens to celebrate Bury mums and all that they do.

The museum, which was in front of The Range, also showcased the must-have Mother’s Day gifts from the centre’s retailers, with displays from brands including Primark, M&S, Lush and Pandora.

On Saturday (9th March) the activation was brought to life by an event team who hosted a Mother’s Day gameshow with dozens of giveaways

Prizes including vouchers, fragrances and sweet treats were given away to more than 100 lucky winners.

The Rock’s partner charity, Liv’s Trust, also offered Mother’s Day card craft making to visitors.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, Centre Director at The Rock, said: “Our Museum of Mum has been a hugely exciting activation and it’s been so lovely to see families coming to see the photos of their mums on display. We’re also really pleased our retailers got on board and helped us to showcase the top Mother’s Day gifting ideas. The final highlight was the giveaways at Saturday’s event – we were delighted to spread joy and gifts with our visitors.”

Local hero switches on The Rock’s Christmas Lights

HUNDREDS of people gathered at The Rock Shopping Centre for a community concert which saw the Christmas lights switched on by a local hero.

Les Edwards, 66, Chairman of Seedfield Sports Junior Football Club was chosen to turn on the Christmas lights following The Rock’s campaign to find a local hero for the job.

He was put forward by members of the community for all his work at the club, with one parent saying: ‘Without Les and his dedication for this football club many children wouldn’t be able to do what they love. Please consider this selfless man because he really doesn’t know how much we value him as a person and what he does for our children.”

The concert took place on Saturday 4th November, running from 2pm-5pm. The shopping centre joined forces with Roch Valley Radio to pull together the special festive event which brought the people of Bury together.

The event featured groups from the Carol Godby Theatre Workshop, Bury Music Service and performers who have been supported by The Rock’s current partner charity, Liv’s Trust.

The line-up was hosted by former Tower FM breakfast presenter Jon Holling and took place on a stage in St John’s Square, in front of The Range.

Ahead of the switch on, Les, said of the nominations: “I’m just a normal bloke, I’ve got a lot of good people around me. It’s not just me, it’s everybody. I just want kids to be able to play football.”

When the lights were switched on the Manchester Survivors Choir took to the stage and performed some Christmas classics as the crowd sang along.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, Centre Director at The Rock said: “We were thrilled to be able to host our Community Christmas Concert and Lights Switch On event after so many years without one. It has always been a very popular event and this year was no exception.

“This year we really wanted to shine a light on the local community by showcasing local talent and celebrating local people – it was heartwarming to watch so many talented youngsters take to the stage and wonderful to see a crowd of smiling, happy faces.

“It was our pleasure to invite Les to turn on the lights, he is a great ambassador for the town.”

Arnold added: “We are so grateful to every single performer for taking part. We couldn’t have put on this show without them.”

The switch on event was free to attend and marks the beginning of the Christmas season for The Rock.  A mystery gift photo op will also arrive in the centre in December and visitors will be encouraged to share their festive snaps for the chance to win a Christmas prize.

Nominate a local hero to switch on The Rock’s Christmas lights

The search is on for a local hero to switch on the Christmas lights at The Rock Shopping Centre this year.

We are holding a Community Christmas Concert and Lights Switch On on Saturday 4th November.

Running from 2pm-5pm we have joined forces with Roch Valley Radio to pull together a special festive event which will bring the people of Bury together.

As part of the community-focused event, we are launching a search for a ‘local hero’ to find a Bury star to help switch on the festive lights.

On the day, the countdown will take place just before 5pm and the local hero will flick the switch to light up The Rock ready for the Christmas shopping period.

Nominations can be made through our website from Tuesday 3rd October and the deadline for submissions is Friday 20th October.

The Rock’s centre director, Arnold Wilcox-Wood, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be holding our Community Christmas Concert and Lights Switch On event this year. This event is all about the community and celebrating our rising stars, our charity partner and a local hero. This event will be very different to our previous switch ons but it promises to be a fun-filled event which will bring together the people of Bury.

“It is the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on the local heroes which is why we are searching for a well deserving local star to help switch on this year’s lights. We look forward to receiving the nominations and we’re sure we’ll have our work cut out in choosing just one person to light up The Rock.”

The event will also feature groups from the Carol Godby Theatre Workshop, Bury Music Service and performers who have been supported by The Rock’s current partner charity, Liv’s Trust.

The line-up will be hosted by former Tower FM breakfast presenter Jon Holling and will take place on a stage in St John’s Square, in front of The Range.
