Free circus school skills at The Rock this summer

Families visiting The Rock this summer will be able enjoy free circus school skills workshops.

We have unveiled our Circus House of Fun installation which will be in situ all month.

Located in the space in front of The Range, the installation features a room of wacky mirrors, a clown themed tunnel of laughter and a hoop throwing game. It’s free for everyone to enjoy every day.

Plus, on Wednesdays from now until 23rd August children can take part in Circus School and learn a new skill every week, the classes will include plate spinning, stilts, juggling and diabolo.

Circus School sessions start at 11am and run every 30 minutes. Each session will last approximately 20 minutes and the last session is at 2:30pm.

This week visitors were able to take part in plate spinning workshops and dozens of children attended throughout the day.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, Centre Director, said: “We wanted to do something completely different this summer and we’re so excited to bring circus skills to The Rock. All of the activity is free for our visitors. We know it can be hard finding something fun and free for the children to do in the summer holidays, but with a different skill to learn each week The Rock is the place to be. Children will be given a report card to have stamped each week and those who complete at least three sessions will be awarded with a Circus School certificate.”

Shoppers indulge in glamour without the guilt

Shoppers enjoyed pampering treatments at The Rock – all in aid of a good cause.

The Rock Shopping Centre hosted its Beauty Rocks event on Friday 7th July – Sunday 9th of July and visitors were able to enjoy complimentary treatments including manicures, hairstyling, and makeup makeovers.

Housed in a marquee in front of The Range, the activity also raised funds for the national One Great Day campaign which will see the donations split between Jigsaw Bury and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

The fundraising drive was given a boost on Saturday (8th July) when cos play group the 5th Legion attended and wowed visitors with their show stopping costumes whilst collecting for the cause.

In total both elements of the activity raised £713.59 for the two charities, the funds will be split equally.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, Centre Director of The Rock, said: “Our Beauty Rocks event proved to be hugely popular with our visitors over the three days. The beauty teams used products from stores at The Rock, including M&S, Primark and Lush. One lucky winner also won a voucher for Urban Radiance Clinic which opened at the end of May.

“It was great to see so many people getting involved with having a pamper treatment whilst enjoying their weekend shopping trip – we know that times are tough right now, so we hope the small treat went a long way, it was also the perfect opportunity for us to raise some funds for charity.

“We must also pay a special thank you to the 5th Legion who were a big hit with our visitors – they collected £454 of the event’s total fundraising. Thank you to everyone who donated.”

Coronation celebrations at The Rock

Families enjoyed a day of truly British fun as they joined The Rock Shopping Centre in celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III.

The shopping and leisure destination held a day of free family fun on Bank Holiday Monday (8th May).

Visitors enjoyed traditional face painting, a treasure hunt around the centre and ceramic crown craft making.

The event was held in a marquee in front of The Range and also included royal stilt walkers and the king’s guards to oversee the activity.

Whilst the fun was free, donations in aid of The Rock’s partner charity were encouraged and £55 was raised for Jigsaw Bury.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, Centre Director at The Rock, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating this historic occasion with our customers, it was great to see so many families taking part in our treasure hunt around The Rock and those who completed the hunt were awarded with a handful of gold from the King’s treasury…of the chocolate variety! The crown craft station and face painting were busy for the whole day and our royal themed characters were hugely popular. Thank you to everyone who joined us.”

Stay snug this autumn with Emma Willis’s latest collection for Next

This season, the TV star’s designs are sophisticated and chic, with heritage-style prints and a classic feel – the perfect addition to your 2020 autumn wardrobe.

Emma Willis’s newest collection with Next features outerwear, loungewear, lingerie and denim from sizes 6 to 22.

Read on to find out about the design inspiration behind the latest collection, which is currently available online and in-store at The Rock Bury

Stylish Autumn Staples

While the previous collection consisted of bold colours and paisley prints, the colour palette for the latest collection is more neutral, striking the perfect balance between autumnal tones.

As well as neutral block colours (very à la mode for autumn 2020), Emma has designed a checked blazer, a staple for colder weather.

The checked blazer comes in two different colours that are easy to pair with most autumnal colours, ‘Port Check’ and ‘Brown Check’. If you love checked styles, you will be happy to know that the collection not only includes a checked blazer but two checked coats – perfect variations for your autumn wardrobe!

“Two things I love are blazers and checks…so we’ve done a checked blazer!! And we’ve done it in two different types of checks!” – Emma Willis

Clothes to Keep You Feeling Cosy

The designer and presenter’s latest collection includes staple autumn colours such as navy, brown and tan with pieces that will keep you feeling cosy and toasty from autumn to winter.

The range also features roll necks that come in red, orange-brown and camel as well as long sleeved tops and padded jackets for ultimate warmth.

After the success of last year’s puffer coat, this year’s collection brings a revamped puffer, designed to keep you feeling cosier than ever and with darker colour options available.

“Last year’s puffer coat was really popular so we’ve decided to do it again but we’ve given it a little makeover! It’s slightly darker khaki, it’s got a bigger neck, bigger hood and we’ve also added in a black colourway!”

Working from Home Style

Emma’s latest collection also consists of chunky knitwear and wide leg trousers – easy to wear when working from home because of their relaxed fit and added manoeuvrability.

Chunky knitwear is back for this collection, available in several colour variations to keep you toasty when pottering around the house.

“We’ve revisited the chunky knit again this year in a lovely cream and a dark navy but we’ve made it shorter so it’s tuckable!”

If you want to get extra comfy, the presenter’s latest loungewear sets are also great, loose-fitted additions to your WFH wardrobe.

The sets vary from a knitted black to a pink two-piece to suit different tastes.

The latest Emma Willis Collection is now available in-store at The Rock Bury and online on the Next website.

Bury awarded Purple Flag

Bury has become the first town centre in Greater Manchester to fly the Purple Flag in recognition of its thriving night-time entertainment.

Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Green Flag for Parks and Blue Flag for beaches – which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between 6pm and 6am.

To achieve Purple Flag status the Bury team had to provide information relating to a number of criteria including cleanliness and safety, movement and transport, the range of attractions, entertainment and events, high quality environment and strong partnership working. This was followed by a late night visit from external assessors to see the town centre in action.

The assessors were particularly impressed with the commitment and evidence of bringing art and culture into the night time economy in Bury. This was seen first hand by the assessors as their assessment coincided with the annual Bury Light Night event in October which this year attracted 25,000 visitors. The assessors also commented on the strong sense of leadership from Bury Council and its partnership with all stakeholders including Greater Manchester Police and the town’s Pub Watch and Street Pastor groups.

Councillor Mike Connolly, leader of the council, said: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award in recognition of the ongoing excellence of Bury town centre. Purple Flag status reflects our recognition of the importance of the night time economy and builds on our overall approach to ensure that the town centre continues to support the wider economy while also supporting our work on the Greater Manchester Alcohol Strategy.

“Bury was recently ranked third best retail destination in Greater Manchester, after the city centre and the Trafford Centre, and was in the top three in the recent Urbanism Great Towns award. This is further proof that Bury continues to go from strength to strength, outperforming neighbouring towns in Greater Manchester for both our day and night time economies.”

The scheme is managed by the Association of Town Centre Managers working alongside the Purple Flag Advisory Committee – a partnership of key stakeholder groups backed by Government, police and businesses, as well as sponsors Diageo Great Britain.

Since 2007, the programme has awarded Purple Flag status to 54 towns and cities in the UK and Ireland. Purple Flag accredited towns have all reported a consistent increase in footfall and decrease in crime within the night time economy.
